As founder and Editor/Publisher of Montecito Journal (a weekly community newspaper and a semi-annual glossy magazine) from 1995 through 2019, I witnessed the slow then rapid disintegration of a free press in the United States. Advocacy journalism (which I wrote about in one of my earlier columns here on Substack) is now in full flower and threatens to destroy what had been determined opposition to corruption and/or propaganda at the highest levels. Once formidable editorial powerhouses have abandoned their stated mission of objectivity and investigative reporting to become sounding boards for liberal/progressive causes, and now routinely ignore and even censor anything and everything that might shine a negative light on their agreed-upon reality.

Jim’s Journal is written as a small counterpoint to the misinformation being promulgated in the new blindly biased mass media.

I sold Montecito Journal at the end of 2019 and am now Chief Travel Correspondent for the glossy, so you can expect to read my libertarian take on politics and a curiously skewed travel journal along with it.
